50 Alternatives to Layoffs

The statistics aren’t as up-to-date as I’d like, but layoffs are startlingly common. Writing for Fortune magazine, Claire Zillman revealed that, in 2015, “employers … announced 493,431 planned layoffs so far [that] year.” Apparently, these companies don’t realize that there are alternatives to layoffs.

Business owners don’t have to cut half their workforces to stay in business—not always, at least. In fact, with just a few hours of research, I uncovered 50 distinct alternatives to layoffs that companies could try before giving their devoted, loyal, hardworking staff members the proverbial ax.

Many people I know and love have lost their jobs to layoffs (or to the layoff’s close cousin, “reductions in force”). It’s unacceptable.
